MUSCAT: Dr Lakshmi Harish, a former student of Oman Dental College (ODC) and currently practicing at Duroob Al Shifa Dental Clinic in Al Dakhliyah region, has been awarded the prestigious title of ‘Best Postgraduate Student of 2023’ by the International Medical College, University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany.


Professor Susanne Bierbaum, who mentored Dr Lakshmi in research methodology, praised her outstanding work and expressed joy in their collaboration. “It was very much fun working with her,” said Prof Bierbaum. “She was full of energy and displayed exceptional initiative in setting up data, qualities not often seen.” Dr Iris Frasheri, clinical supervisor at Ludwig Medical University Munich, Germany, also praised clinical skills Dr Lakshmi for her excellent work.


Dr Lakshmi extends her heartfelt gratitude to her teachers in Oman, acknowledging that the real-life situation-based education provided in Oman helped her meet the high standards of education and examination in Ireland and Germany.


Reflecting on her achievement, Dr Lakshmi commented, “Receiving the title of ‘Best Postgraduate Student of the Year 2023’ is a tremendous honour and a testament to the hard work and support I have received throughout my academic journey.” Dr Harish, completed her MSc in Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry with honours, earning recognition for her exemplary academic excellence and research. Her certificate states, “Dr Harish’s specialist knowledge and work in her master thesis towards the successful completion of MSc in restorative and aesthetic dentistry has been declared exemplary in terms of highest academic excellence and research leading to honours.” Her thesis examiner also praised her research in a recommendation letter for her PhD application, noting that her work exceeded the university’s expectations.

Reflecting on her journey, Dr Lakshmi credits her education in Oman for preparing her to face the highest academic challenges. She is an alumni of Indian School Muladha, Indian School Al Ghubrah, and Indian School Sohar, where she gained proficiency in English and competence in various subjects. Her undergraduate programme not only honed her skills as a dentist but also introduced her to medical research and presentation skills.


While at ODC, she served as the ‘Ambassador of Oman’ in the Gulf Dental Students’ Association (GDSA) for two years, organising oral health awareness campaigns with her team. She also presented at multiple conferences in Oman, UAE, and Germany during her undergraduate studies.


Currently, Dr Lakshmi is working as a full-time dentist at Duroob Al Shifa Dental Clinic in Bahla, Al Dakhliyah Governorate. She has continued her professional development by participating in courses, conferences, and international exams. She holds a Diploma in Primary Care Dentistry (Dip PCD RCSI) and membership of the Faculty of Dentistry (MFD RCSI) from the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (RCSI), which opened opportunities for her to pursue master courses in Germany and the UK.


Looking ahead, Dr Lakshmi plans to pursue a PhD, further advancing her impressive academic and professional journey.
