Parents are lost with the decision of choosing the right summer programmes to enroll their children during vacation. The debate often centres on traditional literacy programmes and skill-based programmes, which mainly prepares children for future challenges.
Many parents still prefer traditional language programmes, emphasising the importance of language skills including literacy.
Hajar al Badi, a mother of six, says, “Language is the cornerstone of communication and understanding. Ensuring my children are proficient in Arabic and English languages is non-negotiable as it opens doors to diverse cultures and enhances their cognitive abilities preparing them for the future.”
Language programmes often include activities like storytelling, reading fluency sessions, shared reading, and interactive games, which are designed to make learning enjoyable.
While Rayda Mohammed, an Arabic language teacher, says, “These programmes build a strong linguistic base and help children develop their vocabulary and improve their grammar, which are essential skills for academic success. Unfortunately, many children joined our programmes with no base or foundation. Therefore many parents are keen on developing literacy skills in the programmes we usually offer.” While, an increasing number of parents prefer programmes that focus on future skills such as coding, robotics, critical thinking, and life skills.
Ahmed al Kumi, a father of three, shares his opinion: “The world is changing fast. Our children need to be equipped with skills to make them competitive in the future job market. Programmes that teach coding or robotics give them a good start in the world. I want to prepare my children for the future not for tomorrow only.”
Skill-based programmes are designed to foster creativity, problem-solving, and technological proficiency.
Asma Yusuf, a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, (STEM) education coach, said, “These programmes are more than just learning to code they teach children how to think critically, solve complex problems, and work collaboratively.”
Some parents agree with a balanced approach, integrating both traditional language learning and future skills development.
A parent and education expert at Ministry of Education, Maryam al Ansari, suggests children can benefit from strong language skills and also be prepared for technological development.
As Ahmed al Kumi mentions, “Each child is unique, and their needs are different. It’s important to choose programmes that align with their interests and future aspirations.”
Parents today have plenty of options to ensure their children are engaged, learning, and growing during summer break. Through language or innovative realms of technology, the aim is to prepare them towards a successful future with new skills.
