Muscat: The Ministry of Labour signed a cooperation programme with Oman Energy Association (OPAL) to facilitate the employment of jobseekers who hold university degrees, university diplomas and general education diplomas (GEDs).

The agreement was signed by Sayyid Salim Musallam al Busaidi, Human Resources Development Under-Secretary at the Labour Ministry, and Dr. Amer Awad al Rowas, CEO of the Oman Energy Association (OPAL).

The cooperation programme seeks to devise training strategies and plans that ensure the preparedness of jobseekers to join the energy and mineral sectors. It also determines the skills needed for those jobs.

The programme offers various types of support: Funding to cover employment-related training programmes, on-the-job training, payment of training fees to training institutes, payment of monthly grants to trainees and the settlement of registration fees. Monthly grants are paid to the trainees according to their educational qualifications: Holders of university degrees get RO 250; holders of post-secondary diplomas and equivalent vocational diplomas get RO 200; and holders of GEDs and less qualifications get RO 150. The programme aims to encourage jobseekers to join training programmes, gain appropriate skills and professional experience so that they could merit a chance of employment in the energy and mineral sectors and other sectors, depending on labour market needs. — ONA
