Bounced cheques, labour violations among top crimes in Oman

Muscat: Bounced cheques (8,461) topped the list of criminal cases reported in 2023, followed by Labour Law violations (7,571), Foreigners’ Residence Law violations (6,263), and fraud cases (3,202).


Muscat Governorate topped the number of cases (16,534), North al Batinah Governorate with 5,913 cases, and Dhofar Governorate with 3,922 cases.


The number of defendants registered in cases has increased by 18.8 percent to 74,667, of which 45.9 percent involved expatriates.


More than 60 percent of crimes reported are not high-risk, while seven murder cases were reported in 2023, compared to 13 in 2022.


The cases received by the Public Prosecution in 2023 were 37,836, an increase of 17.2 percent from 2022.


The Sultanate expressed its satisfaction regarding the handling of the murder case in India in 2018.


Based on the close relations with India, a decision was made to extradite the accused, which involved four people, and currently, an interaction is underway with India to verify the authenticity of the information about the people involved in the crime.


A total of 67,500 investigations were conducted during the past year using electronic systems, including 15,771 reports using remote investigation means of communication.


17,830 judgments were issued during the past year, an increase of 15.4 percent compared to 2022, of which 15,530 judgments were implemented, representing 87.1 percent of the total judgments.


The Public Prosecution Department at the Supreme Court received 812 appeals, achieving a completion rate of 100 percent, and the Supreme Court went along with the Public Prosecution’s opinion in 87 percent of the appeals.


28,575 cases were received from the Royal Oman Police, followed by the Public Prosecution’s electronic services portal with 3,581 cases and the Consumer Protection Authority 2,375 cases.
