MUSCAT: The downdraft wind related to the local cloud development over Al Hajar Mountains was the main concern for weather experts on Wednesday and for the upcoming days.

The temperatures recorded were better with 45 degrees Celsius as the maximum recorded in Fahud, but the humidity ranged between 40 to 80 per cent in Muscat and Salalah recorded humidity of 65 to 85 per cent.

While the pre-monsoon showers are expected to continue over Dhofar, the rains from the local cloud formation slowed down on Wednesday but are expected to continue for today and forthcoming days.

Mainly clear skies are expected for Thursday over most of the governorates with chances of convective clouds formation and isolated rain occasionally thundershower over parts of Al Hajar Mountains and chance of advection clouds and isolated rain over parts of Dhofar Governorate coast. There is also the chance of dust rising over deserts and open areas. Chances of low-level cloud or fog patches are expected over parts of the Arabian Sea and Sea of Oman coastal areas.

The weather expert at Oman Met Office said cumulus cloud activity may cause dust and unstable objects to fly, and horizontal visibility may sometimes decrease.

“Currently, the main concern is the downdraft wind. This is a concern with unstable objects,” said the weather forecaster.

Over the coastal areas of the Sea of Oman winds are reported to be northerly to northeasterly light to moderate changing to variable light at night, and over the rest of the governorates, winds are expected to be southerly to southeasterly light to moderate occasionally fresh over the desert and open areas. While along the Arabian Sea coasts, winds will be southerly to southwesterly moderate to fresh.

“Clouds have been forming over parts of Al Hajar Mountains and chances of scattered thunderstorms continue to form with chances of scattered rainfall on the coast of Dhofar Governorate,” Oman Met Office said.

The sea state will be moderate to rough along the Arabian Sea coasts with a maximum wave height of 3.0 metres and slight over the rest of the coasts with a maximum wave height of 1.25 metres. Meanwhile, rainfall continued on parts of the coast and mountains of Dhofar Governorate and is expected to continue.
