Oman LNG has unveiled plans to transform Wadi Mibam near Sur, into a model for sustainable development as part of its social investment strategy.


Mohammed al Mukhaini, Senior Manager of Communications and Community Affairs at Oman LNG, presented a forward-looking vision for Wadi Mibam’s transformation during the Oman Sustainability Week (OSW), which opened here on Monday, April 29.


Emphasizing the need for a holistic approach, Al Mukhaini highlighted Mibam's natural beauty, nestled amidst mountains and boasting serene lakes and picturesque landscapes. He stressed the importance of preserving these environmental treasures while catering to diverse visitor interests, ranging from tranquil retreats to adventurous hikes.


Speaking exclusively to the Observer, Al Mukhaini emphasized the multifaceted nature of sustainability underscoring the significance of learning from diverse experiences and highlighted that sustainability extends beyond technological advancements. He emphasized the importance of community development in achieving sustainability goals, stating that it encompasses environmental conservation, economic prosperity, and societal well-being.


During the interview, Al Mukhaini highlighted the role of companies like Oman LNG, PDO, and OQ in social investment and performance. He stressed the importance of showcasing the positive impact of these companies on communities and how sustainability initiatives can benefit society as a whole. His insights contribute to the broader conversation on sustainability, highlighting the importance of collaboration and community engagement in driving positive change.


The initiative, according to al Mukhaini, goes beyond conventional infrastructure projects. It aims to create a blueprint for sustainable development that can be replicated globally. Collaborating with an innovation academy, the project integrates academic expertise to ensure comprehensive planning and execution.


Central to the project is the preservation of Mibam's cultural heritage and the empowerment of its local community. Al Mukhaini emphasized the importance of protecting the unique environment and managing tourism sustainably to avoid over-tourism.


The initiative involves extensive stakeholder engagement and environmental impact assessments to ensure a balanced approach. Al Mukhaini underscored the significance of local participation, with plans for community training and skill development programs.


At the core of Oman LNG’s vision is the desire to prevent gentrification and migration from Mibam, thereby safeguarding its status as a vibrant, sustainable community. It reflects a comprehensive understanding of sustainability, encompassing environmental conservation, economic development, and community engagement.
