MUSCAT: On Monday, April 22, in the Wilayat of Ibra in the North Al Sharqiyah Governorate, the International Conference on Energy and Sustainability (ICES) 2024 began, organized by Al Sharqiyah University represented by the College of Engineering, under the auspices of Mahmoud bin Yahya al Zuhli, the Governor of North Al Sharqiyah.


Dr Talal bin Khamees al Wahibi, Dean of the College of Engineering at Al Sharqiyah University, explained in his conference speech that the conference aims to provide a scientific platform for researchers to discuss and review the latest developments and challenges in the field of energy and sustainability. It also aims to facilitate communication, cooperation, knowledge exchange, and experience sharing in the areas of scientific research and development among academics, to contribute to discovering opportunities, developing and refining future scientific visions to achieve sustainable development, and enhance economic and environmental development.


The conference, which lasts for two days, focuses on five themes: energy transition and innovation, environmental sustainability, water sustainability, sustainable practices and solutions, policy, governance, and social impact. These themes are discussed through 82 scientific papers presented by a number of specialists and academics from inside and outside the Sultanate of Oman in three dialogue sessions.


On the first day of the conference, several speakers were hosted. Eng Abdulaziz al Shidhani, Managing Director of Hydrom Oman and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Oman Power and Water Procurement Company, presented a paper on "The Role of Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen in Driving and Leading Sustainability and Energy Transformation in the Sultanate of Oman.”


Dr Abdullah bin Suleiman al Obri, International Advisor and Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the International Energy Agency, presented a paper on "Sustainable Energy Economics and How to Convert it into Wealth".


Alongside the conference, the event sponsor inaugurated the solar power station at the university, which has 1428 solar panels. It also opened the student exhibition and the practical competition focusing on energy and sustainability research among government and private higher education institutions in the Sultanate of Oman, with the participation of 30 scientific researches, as well as honoring the participants and contributors to the success of the conference activities.


The conference was attended by several dignitaries, governors of the province, officials from public and private sector institutions, academics, researchers in the field of energy and engineering from higher education institutions in the Sultanate of Oman, as well as researchers, academics, and participants from a number of international universities from more than 29 countries around the world.
