GENEVA: Omani innovator Sumaya bint Said al Siyabiya won the grand prize at the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva while Razan bint Hamad al Kalbaniya won the silver award. The exhibition saw fierce contention from more than 1,000 innovations representing 40 countries.
Sumaya al Siyabiya said that her participation in the was aimed to showcase her scientific innovation in bioanalysis of microplastics that combines biology and nanotechnology.
Al Siyabiya pointed out that her project offers a promising solution to eliminate and dispose of microplastics in a safe and environmentally friendly manner using microbial confinement and catalytic agent (nano zinc oxide).
Razan al Kalbaniyya said: “I have invented a paint that absorbs X-ray from a natural component, (lycopene), the red pigment found in tomatoes, watermelon, and red fruits and vegetables in general.
She added that her project is the first of its kind in the world for using a natural compound to shield the x-ray room, as the coating can absorb radiation by 97 per cent.
Razan Al Kalbaniyah and Sumaya al Siyabiya expressed their happiness with this achievement and for representing the Sultanate of Oman in this global forum, highlighting the interest they receive and the ability of Omani youth to innovate and compete globally.
The International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva is the largest global event for inventions, and is held annually in coordination with the World Intellectual Property Organization. — ONA
