MUSCAT: With Eid al Fitr just around the corner, a number of citizens and residents are buying animals to be slaughtered during the Eid holidays. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has called on everyone to adhere to the guidelines and buy healthy animals and ensure that the animals are free from diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans.

It is also recommended to slaughter livestock in municipal slaughterhouses to protect public health.

The ministry said that several precautionary measures should be taken into account before, during and after the slaughtering process. The people must ensure that livestock are free of parasites including ticks. The butchers must be in good health, free of any injuries or wounds and should wear protective clothing. After slaughtering, waste must be disposed of in designated places or in bins instead of leaving it in open places to avoid transmission of infection.

The ministry said people must take steps to avoid disease passed between animals and humans like Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever, which is transmitted by ticks. The death rate from infection with this disease in humans is about 40 per cent.

It is noteworthy that common diseases are defined as a group of diseases that affect livestock and can be transmitted between humans and animals through various methods of transmission whether directly or indirectly through the respiratory system, digestive system, eyes, skin, or through ticks, mosquitoes, fleas, lice among others. — ONA
