Oman to take part in 14 events in UAE Youth GCC Games

The Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) on Thursday unveiled the details of Oman’s delegation which will represent the nation in the first edition of Youth GCC Games (UAE 2024) to be held in UAE from April 16 to May 2.


The press conference at OOC headquarters was attended by Taha bin Sulieman al Kishry, Secretary-General and Executive Director of OOC, and representatives of Sports Associations and Committees.


Al Kishry said during the meeting that Oman’s delegation will comprise from 220 athletes, technical and administration members and will participate in 14 events. “This is for first time of OOC that Oman delegation will participate in an event that exceed 200 members. We are very keen in this essential Games to take part and register positive results. The delegation will be headed by Shaikh Khalid bin Mohammed al Zubair while Qais al Zakwani, OOC Board member, will be the vice-chairman of the delegation. Kadhim al Balushi was named as chief de mission of the athletes in presence of assisting team,” he said.


The participating teams in the GCC Youth Games will be in 14 sports including taekwondo and fencing which will take place in Al Fujairah. Chess, handball, equestrian and basketball (3x3) will be in Al Sharjah. Athletics, snooker and billiards, volleyball and table tennis will be hosted in Dubai city while football, sailing, golf and aquatics will be in action in Abu Dhabi.


During the meeting, the OOC officials explained to all the representatives of the sports associations and committees on the dates of the competitions, technical meetings, raising the awareness of the players on the anti-doping and relevant topics to this participation.

The opening ceremony of the GCC Youth Games will take place at the Dubai Opera House and is expected to be attended by around 1,500 people. As many as 36 individual and team sports will shape the features of the Gulf sports event with the participation of 3,500 male and female athletes.


Abu Dhabi will host the football (youth - girls), judo, jiu-jitsu, boxing, golf, swimming, ice hockey, sailing, and cycling track competitions, while Dubai will host competitions for athletics, billiards and snooker, bowling, volleyball, marine sports, air sports, athletics, badminton, tennis, mountain biking, table tennis, motocross, esports racing, and esports. The Emirate of Sharjah will host basketball (3x3), handball, rowing, chess, archery, equestrian (show jumping and dressage), cycling (track race), and shooting competitions, while taekwondo, fencing, and karate competitions will be held in the Emirate of Fujairah. Ajman will host modern pentathlon and triathlon competitions, while Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah will host fitness and karting competitions respectively.


The Omani athletes will look to capture positive results in this crucial Gulf event and raise the national flag high. “We are confident on the teams and players selection for this event. The OOC will provide their continuous support to all the participated teams and we are looking to see out national athletes to impress and claim the medals,” Taha concluded.


Oman’s delegation to the Youth GCC Games (UAE 2024) will feature presence of 11 umpires in sailing, golf, taekwondo, table tennis, chess, aquatics, athletics, volleyball, basketball, football and fencing.
