GENEVA: Oman has strongly underlined the need to implement the Security Council’s resolution calling for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. A statement to this effect was delivered before the 55th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva on Thursday by Idris bin Abdulrahman al Khanjari, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations and international organisations. In the statement, Al Khanjari stressed the Sultanate of Oman’s condemnation of genocide, expulsion, destruction, deliberate starvation and other war crimes committed by Israel against the population in Gaza.

"This collective punishment and genocide constitute a dangerous phase of escalation in a criminal action that lasted more than 70 years,” said Al Khanjari in Oman’s statement, noting that this could have been stopped a long time ago if the international community’s efforts had been sincerely combined to do so. Al Khanjari reiterated Oman’s backing to Francesca Albanese, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, who is exposed to pressures and obstacles, like other officials who chose to follow the path of truth. Oman shares the Special Rapporteur’s findings and recommendations, Al Khanjari added. Al Khanjari pointed out that the scale of crimes committed and are still being committed by the Israeli occupation forces in complete defiance of the whole world "challenge the effectiveness of the human rights system. This makes us all witness to the most horrific crimes, under this dome, without being able to facilitate the entry of aid to Gaza, feed the hungry or protect hospitals, the sick or the medical teams, and without even securing the protection of United Nations facilities or its representatives,” said Al Khanjari.

He added that the Sultanate of Oman calls on the international community to overcome the state of silence, alleviate the impact of the humanitarian crisis and prevent genocide by stopping the supply of weapons to Israel and utilising all means of political pressure and economic sanctions to deter the aggression. Oman also demanded the compensation of Palestinians for the destruction caused by Israel-the killing and all harm befalling the defenceless civilians. - ONA
