Muscat: The country's first electric SUV to be manufactured at Duqm will be ready for customers by the end of this year.

The company, Mays, said through its social media account that the SUV brand Alive 1 will hit the market by the end of this year with prices around RO16,000.

According to the co-founder of Mays, Haider al Zaabi, the vehicle can cover a distance of 510 km on a single charge and fast charging can be done from anywhere, including home.

The company said that as the number of orders exceeded expectations, it is studying the need to increase production in the first year.

The Mays Alive 1 will run fully on electric charging and is designed to suit the climate conditions of the GCC region.

The company focuses on using locally available parts to reduce manufacturing costs to reach the market faster.

The Made in Oman product will open up job opportunities in maintenance and spare parts, the company said.

It may be noted that several governments have proclaimed that 2030-2050 fossil fuel-powered cars will be phased out between 2030 and 2050.

The prototype was recently introduced in the governorates of North Al Batinah and Muscat.

The country has been moving towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 by reducing pollution from the transport sector, which accounts for 18 percent of the total greenhouse gas emissions.

To achieve set goals, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) is offering incentives to manufacture electric vehicles (EVs) in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm and has overseen the installation of charging points across Oman.

Around 60 percent of emissions from the transport sector are from light vehicles, while heavy vehicles, trucks, and the maritime transport sector contribute the rest.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Investment Promotion (MOCIIP) has issued a decision to ensure that fuel marketing companies are committed to provide electric charging units accordance
