Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman reported 369 cases of tuberculosis in 2022, including 101 Omanis and 268 expatriates, according to figures released by the Ministry of Health.

As it marked World Tuberculosis (TB) Day on Sunday, the Sultanate of Oman reiterated the importance of following preventive measures to avoid catching TB.

According to health guidelines by the ministry, people should prevent spreading TB germs to other people by always covering their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, avoiding elbow-to-elbow places, and wearing a mask when hanging out with other people.

As the globe marks this Day under the theme “Yes! We can end TB", WHO will release an investment case on scaling up the rollout of TB preventive treatment to help countries scale up access to TB preventive treatment.

Meanwhile, Tuberculosis, an infectious disease that mainly affects the lungs, is one of the leading killer diseases that led to 1.3 million deaths in 2022. Caused by a type of bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the disease spreads through the air when infected people cough, sneeze, or spit.

Tuberculosis is preventable and can be treated with a combination of antibacterial medications for a period of six to 12 months.
