MUSCAT: The Consumer Protection Authority, in cooperation with the Royal Oman Police, have begun to use electronic link to the vehicle recall sector through the summons system on the authority’s website.

The electronic link is a joint system in the vehicle sector between the Authority, the police and vehicle agencies in the Sultanate of Oman.

The e-link lies in reducing traffic accidents resulting from manufacturing defects in vehicles, increasing the response rate to published recalls, facilitating communication with owners of recalled vehicles to inform them of the existence of a recall for their vehicles, saving public money by not having the owner repair his vehicle at his own expense, providing a real and accurate database, and ensure that the summons reaches the concerned parties.

According to the effects of the electronic link to the quality of consumer services, Hilal bin Saud al Ismaili, Director of the Recalls and Warnings Department at the Consumer Protection Authority, said, “There are preliminary results, according to reports and indicators of car dealerships, in an increase in the response rate from consumers as a result of communicating with the last owner of the vehicle and knowing the status of the recalled vehicles, their locations, and the means of accessing them and detects whether it was in the Sultanate of Oman, exported, or canceled from service.”

The electronic link provides correct data about the vehicle and its owner, such as the name of the vehicle owner, the vehicle number, and the condition of the vehicle, in order to communicate with the vehicle owner and notify him of the recall of his vehicle, and for the agency to provide spare parts from the supplying factory.

The linking mechanism is carried out by receiving agencies’ requests on the linking system to obtain the correct data about the vehicle and its owner. The Authority then sends and receives the request from the Royal Oman Police and then sends the data to the requesting agency.

The steps for electronic linking to the system take place after the agent inserts the chassis numbers into the summons system and approves by choosing (yes) to request obtaining the data of the last owner of the vehicle.

After that, a notification is sent of the request’s arrival to the General Traffic Administration system, and the Authority’s approval to send the request to the General Traffic Administration system. The Authority then receives the data required from the General Traffic Department system, after which it sends the data to the agent.
