MARCH: The Sultanate of Oman joined the rest of the world in celebrating World Wildlife Day hoping to raise environmental awareness and concentrate on Digital Innovation and how to use the techniques and preservation services to move forward with the process of keeping the wildlife surroundings safe from illegal trade.


Represented by Environment Authority (EA), the day was marked under the slogan ‘Connecting the people and the planet and exploring Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservation'. The day is marked on March 3 every year.


According to Oman News Agency, the EA continues its work in protecting the wildlife through a number of projects and environmental initiatives, including, conducting National Biodiversity Survey Project for Terrestrial and Marine Organisms, and using modern technologies to observe wildlife through the use of (Drones). This is in addition to installing track devices through satellites and analysing the results, while activating monitoring, follow-up and statistics applications for some types of Marine and Terrestrial Organisms.

The Sultanate of Oman joined CITES agreement on March 19th, 2008, which is the agreement related to International Trade in Endangered Species of Animals and Plants, which is considered to be the strongest agreements in the world that has its means in keeping the wildlife safe; where this agreement works on organising International Trade operations in fungal species listed in their appendices, which amounted to more than 35 thousand plant and animal species.


In addition, reducing of smuggling operations and combating the illegal trade, especially the trade that takes place across countries’ borders.


The number of countries that took parts in CITES agreement until now is 183 countries.


The aim is to protect species, and know about their life cycle and environmental balance, using camera traps would help monitoring fungal organisms and improve the Environmental Performance Index of the Sultanate of Oman in Biodiversity.
