MUSCAT: The Sultanate, along with other nations, commemorates World Premature Day on November 17 annually. Global statistics reveal that an estimated 15 million infants are born prematurely each year (before completing 37 weeks of gestation). In response to this, the Ministry of Health has issued guidelines for parents on caring for a premature baby upon their return home.

The Ministry recommends creating a tranquil, softly illuminated environment for the child, ensuring cleanliness in the surroundings, avoiding exposure to crowded places, and maintaining clean hands for those who come in contact with the baby.

While premature babies may initially face challenges with breastfeeding, direct skin-to-skin contact with the mother and the provision of breast milk are crucial for their well-being.

Breastfeeding is particularly recommended to enhance the child's immunity, as a mother's milk serves as an ideal nourishment for all infants, especially those born prematurely, on an ongoing basis.

Monitoring the child's breathing and temperature with a sterile thermometer is advised, along with regular massages to aid in weight gain, strengthen bones, and promote the growth of organs.

Ensuring the child's optimal warmth and maintaining a moderate temperature to prevent both coldness and excessive sweating is emphasized.

Following the child's vaccination schedule according to their age in chronological order is essential, as is keeping a record of the child's condition and staying in touch with the pediatrician after leaving the nursery.

Meanwhile, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital on Thursday organised a conference on medical care for premature infants.

Held at Crowne Plaza Hotel in Madinat Al Irfan, the conference saw the participation of more than 200 doctors, physicians, nurses and healthcare professionals. It was aimed at raising awareness about the challenges posed to premature babies in terms of health complications, as well as early birth burdens borne by family, society and the health system.
