MUSCAT: The Omani national para-athletics team secured 11 medals, including two gold, five silver, and four bronze. Thus, raising Oman's medal count to 12 at the fourth West Asia Paralympic Games, held at the Trust Club for the Disabled in Sharjah, UAE, from January 27 to February 3.


The competitions witnessed fierce battles and outstanding performances from Omani athletes, who displayed exceptional skills across various games. Notable achievements include Mohammed al Mashaykhi's gold medal in the javelin throw with a distance of 30.21 metres and Saif bin Hamoud al Muqaibli's gold in the 100 metres dash with a remarkable time of 11.69 seconds.


Additionally, Mohammed al Qassimi won the silver in the javelin throw with a distance of 30.17 metres. Taha al Harasi won the silver in the 100 metres dash with a time of 12.67 seconds. Raiya al Abri won the silver in the shot put in the F 54 category. Muhanna Awlad Thani secured the silver in the shot put in the F33 category. Saif al Muqaibli also won the silver in the 400 metres dash with a time of 56.03. Saqr al Qassimi won the bronze in the 400 metres dash with a time of 1 minutes 73 seconds. Iman al Shamsi won the bronze in the shot put in the F34 category. Shaikha al Hamadi won the bronze in the shot put in the F 54 category. Fawzi al Habishi won the bronze in the shot put in the F 54 category.


Mohammed al Hinai, Director of Oman's delegation at the WAPG, expressed his happiness with the achievements of the national teams in the tournament, especially the athletics and boccia teams, for reaching the podiums and achieving 12 medals so far.


He said, "the achievements are the result of the determination and perseverance our players showed in the Games, along with the dedicated efforts of the technical staff to elevate the players' level. Everyone was keen to raise Oman's flag high in this tournament."


He added, "the achievements provide a great motivation for the players to continue excelling and achieving more success, and we still look forward to winning more gold, silver, and bronze medals in the upcoming competitions in the Games."


Al Hinai mentioned that this participation is a real preparation for Oman's hosting of the fifth West Asian Para Games in 2026 and an important station for preparing some of our players for the Paralympic Games in Paris.


Meanwhile, the Oman goalball team for the visually impaired achieved a well-deserved victory against the UAE team with a score of 11-5. They delivered one of their best performances in the tournament. However, they lost the second match against the Qatari team with a score of 9-5.
