Muscat: During the cabinet meeting, His Majesty the Sultan Haitham bin Tarik on Tuesday has issued directives to fast-track the development of "Al Jabal Al Abyad" and "Wakan" village, poised to transform them into leading destinations for tourism in Oman.

Located 2,000 metres above sea level and in the Western Hajar Mountains is Wakan village, a small mountain village with beautiful terraced gardens overlooking the surrounding mountains above and Wadi Mistal below. The village of Wakan is one of the almost dozen sleepy communities dotting the mountains of Nakhl in Al Batinah South Governorate. While most of the main roads are a smooth and easy drive, the climb towards the mountain is quite a rough one which is why four-wheel drives are required.

Wakan Village, nestled in the mountainous terrain of Oman, is known for its terrace farming and an array of fruit orchards. Its unique climate and picturesque landscapes have long made it a favorite among local and international tourists alike.

Despite its popularity, the village's infrastructure has lagged, with unpaved roads and limited parking facilities. His Majesty's recent directives promise a new dawn of development, set to unlock the full potential of this hidden gem.

The planned enhancements include a comprehensive overhaul of the local infrastructure, creating a conducive environment for tourism and adventure activities. The Sultan's vision encompasses not only the physical aspects of travel, such as road improvements, but also the necessary amenities that would allow Wakan to accommodate a surge in visitors.

The development is also expected to create numerous job opportunities for citizens, in line with Oman's 2040 vision to diversify the economy.

With these new directives, Wakan is set to transition from a seasonal destination to a year-round haven for tourists seeking the tranquility of nature and the warmth of Omani hospitality. This initiative is a testament to the Sultanate's strategic approach to sustainable tourism, ensuring that economic benefits ripple through every layer of society.

The Sultanate of Oman is committed to developing its tourism sector as part of a broader strategy to diversify its economy and provide sustainable livelihoods for its citizens.
