Why are habits so hard to change?

With a new year starting, let’s embrace it with a sense of renewal and the opportunity for positive change. Now is the perfect occasion to gain inspiration to let go of old habits that are no longer aligned with your vision, and focus on adopting new ones that will contribute to your personal growth, health and happiness.


Why do we find it so hard to break old habits? Habits are deeply ingrained in our brains neural pathways which form a habit loop of trigger, routine then reward. This loop becomes automatic over time, making it difficult to interrupt the pattern without intentional effort and repetition. The brain naturally resists change due to the comfort and predictability of established routines, hence moving away from familiar habits can evoke a sense of discomfort and resistance. Bad habits provide immediate reward or relief and create a powerful incentive to continue despite long-term detrimental consequences.


Negative thought patterns, self-doubt or a lack of belief in one’s abilities to change can create mental barriers. Overcoming these limiting beliefs is crucial for initiating and sustaining habit change. Altering automatic responses requires conscious effort, awareness and consistent practice.


Bad habits often serve as coping mechanisms for stress, boredom or emotional discomfort. Changing old habits can be challenging yet with dedication and a strategic approach, we can definitely break the patterns. It is important to identify your habits, understand your triggers and the rewards associated with them.


Self-awareness and self-reflection lay the foundation for effective change. Understanding the reason you want to change the habit is vital — for your own personal benefit and gain, not due to societal demands nor family constricts. Self-motivation will always outlast and outplay the external drive and desire of others.


Replacing the old habits with new positive ones rather than eliminating them will help, as incorporating alternative behaviours that align with your goals will serve as substitutes. Develop a realistic plan to integrate healthier habits into your daily routine. Consider factors like time, resources and potential obstacles. Failing to plan is planning to fail, a well thought out plan enhances the likelihood of sticking to your goals.


Introduce changes gradually. Rapid overhauls are often harder to sustain. Slow and steady adjustments give your mind and body time to adapt. Incorporate stress management techniques into your daily life such as meditation, EFT tapping, breathwork and engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation.


Sharing your inspirations and aspirations with like-minded people can keep you accountable to stay on track. The continual encouragement and positive reinforcements are crucial elements to your on-going success. Even when setbacks occur, understand that this is a normal part of the process. Approach them with resilience, learn from them with clarity and resolve them with an even keel focus.


Remember that the key to changing old habits is consistency and a gradual approach. It is a journey not a destination. Celebrate your successes and stay committed to the positive changes you are making. Over time, these efforts will contribute to your lasting transformation. Here’s to a fruitful year ahead!
