The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth has announced Adatee Hayatee (My Lifetools) as the first group of visual artists with disabilities in the Sultanate of Oman, marking the tenth anniversary of its founding and the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
The announcement, a tribute and incentive to the group of artists with disabilities, comes after a procession of them with their artworks and after successfully conducting several art exhibitions of drawing, photography and woodcarving.
Speaking to the Observer, Laila bint Mohammed al Wahaibiyah, general supervisor of the group, said such an initiative from the ministry would help the artists with disabilities to develop and support the capabilities and talents of its members, hone their skills, and gain additional experience for them.
"We will be able to achieve a great stride forward through training courses, specialised workshops, and participation in local and regional exhibitions, which will contribute to developing the group's performance mechanism to present quality artworks and their artistic career," she said, adding, "Omani artists brush with nature, civilisation and history. Today, we are reaping the fruits of this journey through relentless efforts to bring them up in life, and we are proud of this recognition. Omani artists with disabilities can look forward to greater horizons," she added.
The group was established in 2014 as one of the Oman Telecommunications Company — Omantel's social responsibility initiatives. It includes several talented people with disabilities in several artistic fields to introduce their artistic and creative works to society through art exhibitions and with the participation and support of several individuals, institutions and government agencies.
