Cherie Davis, a UK citizen and passionate solo traveller with a lifetime goal to explore every corner of the globe, embarked on her inaugural solo journey to Oman.
As an expat Business Consultant, her role as a management consultant inspired her to delve into diverse cultures, revealing a world vastly different from what she initially knew.
In December 2021, Cherie drove solo from Dubai to Muscat, a mesmerising journey that unfolded breathtaking scenery.
The five-hour drive from Hatta to Muscat showcased Oman’s authentic beauty and untouched nature, a striking contrast to the urban landscape of Dubai. Her stay at the InterContinental Muscat, an IHG Hotel, recommended by a local Omani tour agency, provided a discounted and convenient experience, with daily pick-ups to her destinations.
Cherie expresses her love for Oman, highlighting the exceptionally friendly people and the unique, down-to-earth atmosphere. Muscat, with its distinct charm and a blend of modernity and antiquity, made her feel at home, transcending time.
The pinnacle of her trip was a private boat ride to Dimaniyat Islands, featuring snorkelling and a BBQ lunch, allowing her to merge seamlessly with the Omani culture.
Additionally, a visit to The House of Amouage, international luxury fragrance brand, left an indelible mark, with Cherie recommending it as a must-see for foreign tourists. The factory and museum’s unique story and production fascinated her, adding to the authenticity of Oman’s overall feel.
Recalling her culinary experiences, Cherie cherishes the aromas of Omani seafood, dates, Arabic coffee, shuwa, and makboos. The traditional underground cooking method of shuwa, requiring considerable time and effort, left a lasting impression.
Cherie fondly expresses her sentiments about Oman, stating, “I cherished Oman because of its incredibly friendly people. It stands out as a truly unique destination, distinct from the other Middle Eastern countries I have explored, including Jordan, Egypt, UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar. What struck me most was the down-to-earth and helpful nature of the local Omani people, engaged in various jobs across diverse sectors, fostering an immediate sense of connection and integration.”
Reflecting on Muscat, she notes its distinctive charm, creating a feeling of being at home. Despite its modern technology and infrastructure, Muscat has a magical ability to transport you back in time, adding an extra layer of allure to this enchanting city.
Her acquisition of frankincense, a unique find in Salalah, surprised and delighted her friends and family in the UK, who now treasure her Omani souvenirs, including perfumes from Amouage and bakhour.
Although time constraints prevented beach, sinkhole, and wadi exploration, Cherie plans a return to experience Salalah during the Khareef season next year, adding another chapter to her fascinating Omani odyssey.
