Muscat: The year-end is around so is the travel season because of the pleasant weather across the Northern Hemisphere.

For the employed class, several firms do not allow the staff to carry forward the pending leaves to the new year, which force them to go on a forced vacation.

While leaves are available, booking flight tickets can be a challenge as most airlines hike up prices in their winter schedule.

Speaking to the Observer, Anuj D, an Indian resident said, "My boss cleared my vacation application only a few days ago, but it seems too late because fares are expensive for almost all days that I would prefer to travel. Days are running out for me and I hope there will be some discount days in the coming days."

Some travel agents told the Observer that people have gathered unconfirmed opinions that online bookings are cheaper compared to taking tickets from agents.

"Sometimes it can be the other way as several websites have hidden fees as convenience charges, service charges or the forced add-ons, though optional, that are quietly imposed on the customers," one travel executive said.

Jamal al Balushi, a frequent flyer, said, "There are no clear tips to book tickets, but for holidays I would suggest booking in advance the flexible fare options (free date change available) and avoid waiting for visas or passport renewals till the last moment."

Across the Internet, there are several tips that travellers can look for while searching for cheap tickets, a few ones are common across the board.

According to the portal Skyscanner, destinations with multiple airports give itineraries and price options.

Sometimes, it will be advisable to book two separate one-way tickets, and some websites allow people to mix and match airlines or the price trends for all days and weeks of a month.

Though less desirable, red-eye flights offer fewer tickets as few people prefer to travel around those hours of the day.

Some suggestions include booking flights as early as possible ensuring the lowest price and better seat options, allowing for early booking of other aspects of the trip, and avoiding weekends.
