Stefan Ryser and Manuela, a passionate Swiss couple, embarked on a remarkable journey to Oman, exploring the country in their unique expedition vehicle, ‘The Green Frog.’ This distinctive camper, a former Swiss firefighter Mercedes Benz 917A, served as both their mode of transportation and a conversation starter throughout their 20-month adventure on the Arabian Peninsula.

Having previously visited GCC countries for both business and leisure, Stefan and Manuela were determined to delve deeper into the rich cultures of the region. Manuela even dedicated two years to studying the Arabic language, enhancing their ability to connect with locals on a more profound level. The couple firmly believes that travelling by camper provides unparalleled opportunities to engage with communities, whether it is staying in the desert or sharing meals with locals.

‘The Green Frog’ became a symbolic door opener, sparking countless conversations with both locals and fellow travellers. This slower, nature-immersed mode of travel allowed them to discover hidden gems and form lasting connections.

Throughout their journey, Stefan and Manuela forged numerous friendships with both Omanis and fellow travellers like Moadh al Sadi, some of which transcended borders, leading to reunions in Saudi Arabia and Norway. Reflecting on these experiences, Stefan notes, “Sometimes travels cross again, fostering intercultural exchange and making these friendships truly special.”

Their interactions with Omanis were exclusively positive, marked by invitations into homes, guided tours of cities, and shared moments of food and conversation. The couple particularly appreciated the Omani people’s friendliness, hospitality, and respectful approach to travellers’ privacy, creating an experience unlike any other.

Recently, Stefan and Manuela showcased ‘The Green Frog’ at the Suisse Caravan Salon, Switzerland’s largest camping fair. Their presentation covered the magic of deserts, natural wonders, and cultural treasures of the Arabian Peninsula, focusing on key Oman destinations such as Rimal Al Sharqiya, Salalah, Khareef season, Hajar Mountains, and Nizwa Souq.

The camper itself has a fascinating backstory, having served over 20 years as a firefighter vehicle before transforming into an expedition vehicle with a vibrant green exterior. With a permanent 4x4, lockable differentials, and compact wheel spacing, it navigates diverse terrains effortlessly. The living cabin, powered by solar panels and a B2B-loader, includes essential amenities for a prolonged journey.

Stefan, a tourism industry professional and lecturer, and Manuela, working in an industrial company, seamlessly combined their expertise and passion for travel.

In their presentation, Stefan and Manuela detailed the ease of travelling through Oman and Saudi Arabia by camper, citing the abundance of overnight spots and the diverse landscapes, ranging from deserts to pristine beaches, majestic mountains, and captivating wadis.

Their travel tales, shared on www.frog-expedition.com and www.instagram.com/frog_expedition, offer daily insights and document their route, providing a source of inspiration for fellow travellers.

As their journey continues, Stefan and Manuela’s commitment to immersive travel, cultural exchange, and fostering connections remains at the heart of their adventures.
