Consultancy bid floated to study traffic management in Muscat

Muscat: Muscat Municipality has issued a tender for consultancy services to study the traffic situation in the capital.


Bids have been invited from specialized international companies with experience in the field of road and public transportation to identify current traffic patterns, peak times, volume, weak spots in the existing road network, and areas most prone to traffic congestion.


The last date for purchasing tender documents is December 16, while the last date for submitting a bid is January 7, 2024.


The study is expected to improvements to the existing road network, future connections, and the governorate’s needs for public transportation to keep pace with the growth of population and vehicles by taking into account development plans in urban and tourism sectors.


The consultant will provide solutions to reduce traffic congestion in the short, medium, and long term on a priority basis.

Population


Muscat is the most densely populated governorate in the country with its six wilayats - Muscat, Muttrah, Seeb, Qurayyat, Bawsher, and Al Amerat - home to 28.7 percent of the total population of the Sultanate of Oman with 1,473,624 people, including 573,387 Omanis (38.9 percent) and 900,237 expatriates.


Muscat's population increased by 2.5 percent to 1,449,396 people from 1,401,456 people at the end of 2022.


According to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), the total population of the Sultanate of Oman increased by 6.1 percent at the end of the third quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. The percentage of the Omani population in the Sultanate is 56.69 percent.


Accidents


The capital reported 398 road accidents reported in 2022, which resulted in 89 deaths.


According to ROP, 17 of 1,187 accidents reported in 2022 were due to flaws in the road, which also resulted in 5 five deaths across the country.
