Palestinian lives do matter

Last week I was teaching a group of medical students about medical ethics. I started by presenting the Islamic version of the Hippocratic Oath that doctors from around the world swear before starting to deal with patients.

The oath summarises the main ethical principles that govern how doctors treat their patients respecting the decisions patients make, focusing on doing what is good for the

patients, and avoiding what is harmful while observing patients’ privacy and keeping their secrets.

The oath reminds us to respect all humans regardless of differences in race, religion, or political affiliation.

At this stage, one of the students raised his hand and asked “Dr did you see the news about the Israeli doctors who called for bombing hospitals in Gaza? Did these doctors ever study medical ethics?

The past few days and the events in Gaza showed the dark side of the human race.

From celebrities dressing their kids for Halloween in costumes to look like the innocent children who were bombed in Gaza to the shameful petition signed by criminal doctors dressed in white coats calling for the destruction of the few remaining hospitals in Gaza, to outrageous suggestion from an Israeli minister that “dropping a nuclear bomb on the Gaza Strip was one of the possibilities”.

Many news channels and social media platforms continue to show the Israeli government as the victim in this conflict and brainwash the public in an attempt to enforce their blinding biases and negative attitudes to the Palestinians considering them worse than animals and denying them their basic rights refusing calls for ceasefire.

If this is not racism, I don’t know what it is.

The current situation of the world is yet to be understood if that is even possible. It’s a matter of standing with the truth or standing with genocide and this has shown many of us the unravelled truth of the people surrounding us.

It has also been a great deal at freeing us from the celebrity worship culture, that blinded this generation from the reality that just because you love someone doesn’t mean they’re good people.

We are not freeing Palestine, but it is freeing us by strengthening our faith in god almighty and believing that justice will be served eventually.

The fake propaganda being spread through the Western media no longer has the same impact it did in the past.

The world is also waking up to the repugnant double standards where you cannot “assume a gender” but someone can kill and occupy a country for 74 years.

So let us continue boycotting companies that financially support the occupational forces and contribute to the continuous manslaughter of innocent lives in the city of Gaza, that is the least we can do.

Remember that your actions do matter.
