MUSCAT: Based on the Royal orders of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, Majlis Ash’shura met today and elected its chairman and two deputies for the tenth term (2023-2027).
The members of the Shura Council re-elected Khalid bin Hilal bin Nasser al Ma'awali, representative of Wadi Al Ma'awil, as Chairman for the 10th term of the Council by an absolute majority, after competing with other three members.
Al Ma'awali was re-elected the chairperson of the council for the fourth time in a row, after securing 58 votes out of 89 votes.
Hassan al Nabahani secured 24 votes and Ahmed al Balushi with 5 votes and Ibrahim al Hadi got 2 votes.
The members also elected Tahir al Junaibi, representative of Duqm, as the first Deputy Chairman, with 47 votes of the total number of votes, by relative majority during the second round.
Said bin Hamad Al Saadi, representative of Suwaiq, elected as the Second Deputy Speaker with 52 votes.
During the session, a total of 90 members of the Majlis have taken oath, vowing to be committed, sincere and loyal to the Sultan and the homeland.
According to the figures released by the Majlis, the number of Shura members holding PhD are six, members with Master degree are 19, 26 with Bachelor degree, while 34 are Diploma holders.
The majority of the Shura members fall in the age group (50-60) years old, constituting 42.22 per cent of the total members.

Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed al Nadabi, Secretary-General of Majlis Ash’shura, affirmed that Majlis Ash’shura will continue carrying out its national duties for the tenth term with generous support and great attention from His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik as per the powers assigned to the council by the Basic Statute of the State and the Law of the Council of Oman.
Al Nadabi praised the procedures and mechanisms applied in the elections of the tenth term of Majlis Ash’shura and the active participation in the voting process which reached 65.88 of registered voters.
He also commended the newly introduced electronic voting which was distinguished with accuracy and ease of use.
No woman has made it to the country’s consultative council despite women’s intensive participation in the voting process.
The elected members represent 63 wilayats with two members for each wilayat whose population exceeds 30,000 (27 wilayats) and one representative for wilayats with less than 30,000 people (36 wilayats). A total of 843 candidates stood for the elections which were held on Sunday for Omanis residing in the country via ‘Intikhab’ application.
The number of registered voters who cast their ballots stood at 496,279, which was 65.88 percent including 258,847 male voters, representing 52.16 percent, and 237,432 female voters, representing 47.84 percent of the total number of 753,690 voters registered at the electoral register.
