Give yourself time during the grieving process

We have all experienced some degree of loss in our lives; it’s sadly part and parcel of our human experience. Whether you have suffered the loss of a loved one, a job, a relationship or been affected by a significant change, grief is a natural response. While there is no one-size-fits-all solution for processing grief, there are several steps you can take to navigate this challenging journey.

Give yourself time to go through the emotions of grief. These are usually shock, denial, guilt, anger and depression before we are even willing or capable to enter acceptance. Until then, there will be a feeling of void and hopelessness. The stages are not linear and everyone experiences grief differently, there is no time frame we can impose on how long we will process the emotions.

Acknowledging your feelings is vital in understanding where you are right now. Honour your sentiments, allowing them to surge through and over you like waves until you feel calmer. Understand that healing is not a linear process and there will be continual waves upwelling throughout your life. We need to accept the unpredictable nature of grief, however over time the waves will be more manageable and less triggering.

Expressing your emotions in a healthy way can be cathartic through writing, art or simply talking. Also creating a grief ritual is a virtuous way to find solace. Rituals such as lighting a candle in memory of your loved one, planting a tree in their honour or writing a letter to them can help you connect with your emotions and provide a sense of closure.

Seeking support is crucial for your overall emotional and mental well-being. Support groups can provide a sense of community and understanding that is essential during a grieving process. Sharing your experiences with others who are also grieving can be both comforting and healing. Confiding in family members and friends who are capable to listen to your thoughts and feelings without judgement is key. In some cases, grief can be overwhelming. If you find it challenging to cope, consider seeking professional help from a therapist or grief coach.

Grieving can take a toll on our physical and mental health. Make sure to prioritise your self-care by ensuring to focus on eating nutritious meals, drinking lots of water, getting regular exercise and enough sleep. We can easily spin into a downward spiral if we allow ourselves to. During these tough times, it is even more crucial to focus on your oxygen mask while practicing deep breathing and meditation to calm your body and mind.

Acceptance allows us to look back on the past fondly. Cherishing the good times and the positive memories can help balance your perspective. While you will always carry the memory of your loves ones, staying open to new experiences is an important part of healing.

Remember, processing grief is a unique journey for everyone. By acknowledging your emotions, seeking support and practicing self-care, you will move forward towards a restorative place. While some nostalgia may always remain, it can become more manageable with time, patience and self-compassion.
