MUSCAT: The Civil Aviation Authority has announced the successful completion of the rehabilitation of the southern runway at Muscat International Airport, effectively enabling a significant ramp-up of domestic and international air traffic at Oman’s principal international airport.

With the southern runway back in operation, Muscat International Airport will be able to handle multiple take-off and landings, while also contributing to noise mitigation experienced by residents of neighbourhoods located in the vicinity of the airport.

The Authority indicated that the runway is currently being prepared to begin the movement of aircraft after obtaining the necessary certificates in accordance with safety requirements and regulations for the start of landing and take-off of aircraft.

An official explained that the licensing process includes an actual examination of the runway and taxiways by specialists at the Civil Aviation Authority, in accordance with the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization.

In addition, updated plans to include the airport’s landing and take-off runways will be published and distributed to all airlines for use.

The Authority stated that the new devices are being tested and operated in parallel with the operational readiness phase, including automated landing and air monitoring systems, in coordination with the airport operator and other service providers.

This helps air traffic controllers at the airport become familiar with and train new settings and procedures for operating the two runways.

Use of the southern runway of Muscat International Airport was halted in mid-2022, pending the recertification of the landing strip in line with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) guidelines. Upon the completion of the certification process, the runway will be brought into operation. — ONA
