MUSCAT: The Municipal Council of Muscat Governorate held its seventh meeting for this year under the Chairmanship of Sayyid Saud bin Hilal al Busaidy, Governor of Muscat and Chairman of the Municipal Council, on Wednesday.


The Municipal Council reviewed a study on the central car market in the Sultanate of Oman which is the third largest car market in the GCC with 1.5 million registered vehicles 80 per cent of which are passenger vehicles, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).


The Municipal Council viewed a visual display on Khazaen Central Car Market at Khazaen Economic City. The display included a number of topics and provided an introduction to Khazaen Economic City, an integrated economic city currently under development in the Wilayat of Barka in South Al Batinah Governorate and one of public-private partnership projects.


The Khazaen Central Car Market project aims to organize the many used car markets within Muscat Governorate and develop them into a commercial, industrial and logistical centre aimed to serve the automotive sector, allow consumers access to a wide range of products and services.


The meeting approved the Council’s recommendation on the draft decision regulating the use of residential buildings for commercial purposes. The decision classifies the streets into approved and unapproved ones. Approved roads mean those in which commercial activities are permitted at the residential buildings overlooking them.

The Council reviewed the recommendations of the Health and Environmental Affairs Committee on assessing the quality and safety of fish in Muscat Governorate markets. It also reviewed the recommendations of the Governorate Development Committee regarding walkway projects in the Muscat Governorate which are implemented by the Muscat Municipality in the wilayats of Muscat Governorate. — ONA
