Let’s transition from mind full to mindful

With days flying into weeks and months seemingly passing us by, it’s no wonder we feel overwhelmed and not in control of our days. In this era of constant notifications distracting our attention coupled with numerous matters going on at all times, it’s no surprise we feel submerged by the weight of the daily grind.

Many of us find ourselves preoccupied with our thoughts and worries, which in turn leads us into a state of “mind full”. The concept of mindfulness has gained significant traction which means transitioning from the mental chatter into a much more peaceful, aware and present state of being.

How do we move from our minds being filled with concerns that are not aligned with our ideals, values and principles to eliminating all the noise and focusing on what is required to become more engaged in the present moment? Transitioning from a mind full of thoughts and distractions to a state of mindfulness is a journey that requires practice and awareness.

Before embarking on this uplifting journey, it’s essential to recognise the signs of a “mind full” state. This includes feeling overwhelmed, anxious and constantly dwelling on past regrets or focusing on future uncertainties. Acknowledging this state is the first step towards transformation.

One of the quickest and simplest ways to calm the nervous system and bring you back into the present moment is through deep breathing. Whenever you feel your mind starts racing, pause and take a few intentional deep belly breaths. Regular meditation and mindfulness exercises can help you cultivate awareness and presence.

Try to limit multi-tasking as this is a hallmark of a “mind full” state. With the attempts at always being busy, the result rarely is as fruitful than when we focus on one task at a time. This will improve your work quality and also enhance your ability to be more present.

Today’s playground for the “mind full” state is screen addiction. Hence, dedicate time for a digital detox allows your mind to unwind and reconnect with the physical world. Engage all your five senses in order to feel more connected to your body and be less distracted by your thoughts. Nature’s calming effect will always bring you to a wonderfully grounded, centred and present state allowing you to become more in tune with the world around you.

In conversations, practice active listening. Instead of formulating your response while the other person speaks, give them your full attention. This will deepen your relationships while cultivating mindfulness.

Remember that becoming mindful is a journey, not a destination which requires consistent effort and practice. Realise that the lapses from your “mindful” state will occur and this is all part of the process. The path from “mind full” to “mindful” is achievable for anyone willing to make the effort. By incorporating mindfulness practices into your daily life and learning to appreciate the present moment, you will find greater peace, reduce stress and lead a more fulfilling life. It all starts with today!
