Cyclone Tej downgrades to Category 1

Muscat: Cyclone Tej has been downgraded to Category 1 and is 270 km from Salalah City with a windspeed of 64-82 knots at the center.


It rained heavily in some Willayats of Dhofar governorate as a direct effect of the cyclone, especially in places such as Sadah, Dalkhut, and Hasik.


The direct impact is expected to increase on Dhofar and Al Wusta governorates with heavy downpours (100-300) mm with the expected flow of wadis and fresh to very severe blowing winds (40-70) knots.


The sea is expected to be very rough ranging between 8-11m.

In addition, storm surges might cause seawater inundation over low-level coastal areas.


The Ministry of Health, in coordination with NCEM, has decided to evacuate the Sultan Qaboos Hospital in Salalah, Dhofar Governorate.


The Relief and Shelter Sector said that there are 69 shelter centers in Dhofar Governorate equipped to accommodate about 15,000 people, of which 30 centers have been activated so far and there are 4,471 people in them, including 840 citizens and 3,631 residents.

As part of the impact of Cyclone Tej, a number of wilayats of #Dhofar Governorate including Sadah received 19mm, Salalah 18mm, and Rakhyut 16mm of rainfall between between Sunday night and early Monday morning (until 8 am).
