A few weeks ago, I was conducting a workshop on well-being at work and mentioned the importance of keeping a work-life balance when one of the participants told me that it’s something easy said and done.

He explained that the competitive nature of his job demands extra working hours and working during weekends and holidays.

He returns home late most evenings to find his children already in bed and leaves the following morning before they wake up.

He explained that most companies are interested in performance and do very little to help their employees achieve work-life balance.

In simple terms, “work-life balance means allocating time and energy efficiently to both work-related activities and personal interests, relationships, and self-care.”

Achieving the right balance enables individuals to excel in their professional lives while maintaining a satisfying personal life.

Here are a few key reasons why companies should help their employees achieve work-life balance.

First, employees who are able to balance work and personal life are happier at their jobs. This happiness boosts their energy and productivity, which is good for them and the company.

Second, balancing work and personal life with breaks helps them stay productive while working too much can make people tired and less productive.

Thirdly, balancing work and life enables people to spend more time with family and friends. This makes relationships stronger and provides emotional support when needed.

Fourthly, people who enjoy hobbies and learning new skills achieve better personal growth which has a positive impact on their overall wellbeing.

Fifthly, people with good work-life balance are less likely to get sick from stress which means fewer unplanned days off and a more dependable workforce.

Attracting and keeping employees: Companies that care about work-life balance attract good employees and retain them. This reduces hiring and training costs.

7. Creativity and new ideas: Rested minds are more creative. Employees with time to relax come up with new ideas to solve problems at work.

8. Good workplace vibes: A workplace that supports work-life balance is a happy place. Happy employees work together better and create a good company culture. So, what can you do to achieve work-life balance? Here are a few tips:

Make to-do lists and learn to love them. I adore to-do lists, this will help you plan your time well and avoid taking work home. Make sure you exercise regularly as it’s a great way to release stress and regulate your mood. Block out distractions while working stay focused if you are sharing an office with colleagues and make sure you don’t indulge in unnecessary talks.

Learn to how better delegate work to other team members so you can focus on other tasks.

Give yourself time to relax when you need it. Take a walk in nature, or listen to music. Make boundaries between work and personal time so you don’t overwork. Have regular hobbies and spend quality time with your loved ones. This will enhance your support systems which contribute to your overall well-being.

Finally, achieving a work-life balance requires conscious effort, discipline, and self-awareness. But it is worth all the effort as it can lead to more fulfilling lives and lasting happiness.
