BARKA: The Mango Production and Marketing project in the Wilayat of Barka is an output of the Food Security Lab and is overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources. It aims to boost national production of mangoes for the local market.

Nasser bin Hamad al Sabaei, CEO of the project, said that the project has an investment value of RO 1.250 million and it occupies an area of 200 acres. He added that the Mango Production and Marketing Project is an integrated farm for mango cultivation and aims to provide a large supply of high-quality mangoes.

The implementation of the project began in accordance with the plan. Besides, a modern irrigation network was installed and electricity was connected to the farm. In the first stage, 5,000 mango saplings were planted and an additional 5,000 saplings will be planted by the end of this year as per the executive plan. Upon completion, the project will have 17,000 mango saplings planted on an area of 200 acres to produce an estimated 3,600 tonnes of mangoes annually by 2028. The project is expected to provide job opportunities for nationals, he added.

The project applies latest methods and guidelines and internationally recommended agricultural methods in the plantation of mango saplings and other methods like pruning, etc., to provide appropriate environment for large-scale cultivation of mangoes. — ONA
