Mango production project in Barka begins

BARKA: The Mango Production and Marketing project in the Wilayat of Barka is an output of the Food Security Lab and is overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources. It aims to boost national production of mango for the local market.


Nasser bin Hamad al Sabaei, CEO of the project said that the project has an investment value of RO 1.250 million and it occupies an area of 200. He added that the Mango Production and Marketing Project is an integrated farm for mango cultivation and aims to provide a large supply of high-quality mango.

The implementation of the project began in accordance with the executive plan with the farm fenced and the wells dug. Besides, a modern irrigation network was installed and electricity was connected to the farm. As a first stage, 5,000 mango seedlings were planted and an additional 5,000 mango seedlings to be planted by the end of this year as per the executive plan. Upon completion, the project will have 17,000 seedlings planted on an area of 200 acres to produce an estimated 3,600 tonnes of mango annually by 2028. The project is expected to provide job opportunities for nationals, he added.


The project applies the latest methods and guidelines and the internationally recommended agricultural methods in the plantation of mango trees such as fertilizers, pruning, etc, to provide the appropriate environment for large-scale production. — ONA
