The second report on the prospects for the implementation and monitoring of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries was launched on Thursday under the auspices of Dr Laila bint Ahmed al Najjar, Minister of Social Development.

The launch took place at a ceremony held at the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Complex in Salalah. In attendance were officials from various relevant sectors, including Dr Amer bin Mohammed al Hajri, Director General of the Executive Office of the GCC.

Dr Laila said that the GCC countries are committed to promoting the rights of persons with disabilities and empowering them within society. He added that the ratification of the CRPD by the GCC States is an expression of this commitment.

The report highlights the progress that has been made in the implementation of the CRPD in the GCC countries. However, it also identifies areas where further action is needed.

Dr Laila said the Ministry of Social Development believes that the success of states in achieving the rights of persons with disabilities can only be achieved through cooperation and integration of efforts between countries, with the participation of their governmental, civil and private institutions, and ensuring the active participation of persons with disabilities.

“The Ministry of Social Development congratulates all participating countries on the completion of the preparation of the report and urges them to continue working to promote the rights of persons with disabilities,” she said.

The report was prepared despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, with experts and specialists working to overcome these challenges.

The Ministry is committed to continuing its work to promote the rights of persons with disabilities in the GCC countries. The Ministry believes that the success of states in achieving the rights of persons with disabilities can only be achieved through cooperation and integration of efforts between countries, with the participation of their governmental, civil and private institutions, and ensuring the active participation of persons with disabilities, she added.
