MUSCAT: The Digital Sustainability Hackathon organised by OQ, the global integrated energy group, brought together more than 100 young Omani innovators who competed to find innovative solutions for societal and organisational challenges in the fields of energy, health, safety, decarboniszation and environment conservation. Those innovators employed modern technologies, waste management techniques, energy consumption optimization, eco-friendly transportation and construction, in addition to safety uniforms leveraging the Internet of Things (IoT).

The hackathon was organised as part of OQ’s endeavors to meld the potential of modern technology with the passion of forward-thinking innovators, producing solutions that champion sustainability and resilience in line with Oman's Vision 2040. It embodies OQ’s commitment to the broader goals of the Sultanate of Oman, seeking to address environmental challenges while promoting economic and social prosperity.

Engineer Khalid al Asmi, Acting Managing Director - OQ Salalah Cluster, said: “The Digital Sustainability Hackathon is more than just a competition. We view it as a beacon, drawing inspiration from the guiding principles of Vision 2040. It is our open call to all visionaries, prompting them to ideate and create digital strategies that resonate with Oman's overarching ambitions.”

He added: “This platform also spurs a paradigm shift in how we interact, as a society, with sustainability. By facilitating this integration of creativity and purpose, we aim to empower a generation of young problem solvers who work towards promoting diversity, sustainability and prosperity in Oman in the years to come.”

It is worth noting that the Hackathon is a competition-based event for 48 hours to innovate solutions for specified challenges. It seeks to build an effective and innovative society, in addition to empowering the youth in innovation and sustainability. The hackathon also aims to generate innovative ideas to address the current challenges in the sustainable energy sector.
