Muscat: The Ministry of Labour organized a media meeting to discuss the details of the New Law in the presence of Salem al Busaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labor for Human Resources Development.

The main points highlighted at the meeting are:

Based on economic conditions, the minimum wage will be determined in consultation with stakeholders (including workers via the General Federal of Oman Workers (GFOW) and approved by the Council of Ministers. The stakeholders also include the business community (Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry).

The Law seeks to achieve several goals, including enabling the Omanis to assume leadership positions. It is also realistic and flexible that adapts to economic changes and is attractive to investors.

The law offers a number of options for workers, including 10 paid hours a week and obliging the employer to implement procedures that make the work environment attractive.

The law increases the number of vacation days, which is highly attractive compared to other Gulf countries.

The Labor Law specified the mechanism for the transfer of workers to a different project and mandated the employer to employ Omanis who were working on the old project, by granting them the same wages and benefits agreed upon in the agreement. The worker preserves his right to work even if the project moves to another location, and he receives his salary and benefits according to the agreement signed between him and the institution.

The employer may terminate the worker's service for not reaching the required level of work productivity after giving him 6 months as a last chance, provided that another Omani is appointed to fill his job.

The employer can assign any worker to another institution on a temporary basis, as this includes reducing operating and recruitment costs, and this is often in jobs with high experience.

During the first year after childbirth, a woman is given an hour to take care of her child, and she determines it according to her own circumstances, whether it is the beginning or end of work, or between working hours.

The law allows the employer to allow the worker to work for someone else on a temporary basis.

Sick leaves must be proven by an official authority and must be approved by the Ministry of Health if they are issued by a private hospital. In the event of violations, there will be legal procedures.
