Technology has become an integral part of our daily lives. In today’s world with smartphones, social media, notifications, and virtual meetings, we are inundated with a digital landscape that claims our attention.
While technology has undoubtedly revolutionised the way we live and work, it has led to a perplexing reality — the more connected we are online, the more disconnected we are becoming from ourselves.
This disconnect can lead to feelings of aloofness, stress, and even a loss of purpose in life. Excessive screen time has been linked to a decline in mental well-being, fuelling morose feelings of inadequacy and low worth, further encouraging a disconnection of self.
Technology often overfeeds us information and increases our need for instant gratification, leaving little room for creativity and imagination to flourish.
Disconnecting from screens allows us to delve into the realm of our thoughts, ideas, feelings, and actions. When we quieten the noise of the outside world and tune into our inner realm, countless possibilities open to innovative thinking, creative problem-solving, and action-taking.
Although a week-long detachment from your phone is highly recommended and can be facilitated through holidays and travel, it’s seldom possible, annually at best — hence it is about striking a daily balance between lending your time to the digital domain and prioritising your inner world.
Engaging in enjoyable activities and pursuing hobbies especially outside in nature, will lead to a heightened sense of self-awareness and clarity of thought.
Embracing digital disconnection fosters a return to conscious living, granting the ability to savour the present moment and find joy in the simple things.
It allows us to practice more mindfulness through all of our senses and become one with the present moment, giving enough time for our thoughts to manifest without constant interruptions.
Ensure to set boundaries and establish specific time periods to do at least two activities daily away from technology. Create a plan and schedule in the days and time. Commit to being screen-free and engaging in pursuits such as playing board games, cards, reading, exercising, meditating, exploring nature, and spending quality time with loved ones.
Communicate your intentions with your family and friends and have a buddy who will keep you accountable, which will make the process more enjoyable and effective.
Consider going on a digital detox retreat where technology usage is limited or prohibited. This immersive experience can help you reset and reconnect with yourself. Explore paths and interests you might have been neglecting and rediscover past passions or cultivate new ones. Self-care and self-love are extremely important features to factor into your mindset of reconnection.
The online world is growing at a speed we cannot even comprehend. Ensure you don’t get swept away by the tidal wave of information and remain trusting in your own inner wisdom to guide you to calmer waters — a disconnect from external influences and a reconnect to our truer selves.
