Muscat: Nama Water Services has said that the main desalination and water production plants in the Wilayat of Barka have been affected by the green tide phenomenon, which results in a decrease in the quantities of desalinated water.

"Companies operating in the sector are taking a number of precautionary measures to ensure the safety of stations and water quality and to reduce the impact on subscribers."

Namaa Water Services has activated emergency plans, which include operating alternative sources and reserve wells and activating the interconnection between desalination plants Suhar, Barka, and Al Ghubrah.

The company called on subscribers to cooperate by taking the necessary precautions and rationalizing water consumption until the quality of seawater quality improves.

According to environmental experts, the green tide is huge accumulations of large green algae that occur in many parts of the world but are more common in temperate and tropical latitudes.

Coastal ecosystems are becoming more vulnerable to harmful algal blooms (HABs), especially in enclosed coastal embayments, as a result of increased nutrient enrichment caused by urbanization, tourism, industrial wastes, desalination plants, and agricultural activities.
