Muscat: In the scorching summer sun, it is common to encounter snakes at homes either crawling or hanging out somewhere to escape from hot places to wet ones.

For this, Muscat Municipality has set some precautionary measures to avoid their prevalence in residential neighbourhoods.

The municipality stated that it has intensified its efforts to combat venomous reptiles, specifically snakes by placing snake repellents or glue traps. It added that a special preventive drive covering parks is carried out to combat poisonous legless species.

The municipality confirmed that it deals with all snake spotting-related reports, noting that the adopted method by the municipality is to bring the snake back to its suitable natural environment.

According to the municipality, people should stay away if they spot a snake and make sure that children or pets are away, too. It is not recommended to kill snakes as much as possible as they play a vital role in maintaining the balance of ecosystems.

In the event of spotting a snake, a person is advised to call the municipality's call centre 1111.

The most common species in Oman include the Arabian cobra, saw-scaled viper, puff adder, wadi racer, tree snakes, sand viper, sand boa and the cat snake.

For snakebites, experts recommend going to a hospital immediately while victims must avoid putting pressure on the wound. If bitten by a snake, there is no need to be nervous but rather stay calm and move away from the site quietly.
