SALALAH: The Omani Commission for Human Rights (OCHR) collaborated with the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Youth in Dhofar Governorate to raise awareness about human rights in the country.

An event marking the issue of human rights was held at Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment in Salalah.

The OCHR representative gave a lecture, providing attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the commission's vital role in safeguarding and promoting human rights. The lecture delved into the functions of key OCHR departments, including the Monitoring and Receiving Reports Department, the Legal Affairs Department, the Organisations and International Relations Department, and the Information and Communication Department.

Attendees also gained valuable insights into the OCHR's dedication to monitoring legislation related to human rights and effectively responding to reports from international organisations.

OCHR also held an engaging educational session for children at the Children's Library within the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex. This session aimed to familiarise young minds with their rights, as outlined in the Omani Child Law of 2014 and the International Convention on the Rights of the Child. The topics covered included fundamental rights such as access to information, the right to life, education, healthcare, and family care.

Children participating in the session were provided with informative publications and captivating graphics, ensuring the learning experience was enjoyable and enlightening. By doing so, the OCHR aspires to empower the youth with the knowledge of their rights and responsibilities, nurturing a culture of respect for human rights across Oman.

The event drew a diverse range of stakeholders, including government officials, civil society representatives, and members of the public. It proved to be a resounding success, effectively raising awareness about the OCHR's pivotal work and underscoring the importance of human rights in the Sultanate of Oman.

Ali Salim al Shanfri, a participant in the lecture session, shared his perspective, saying, "Attending the event provided me with a deeper understanding of the OCHR's efforts and the significance of human rights. Learning about the commission's engagement with international organisations was particularly fascinating. Oman needs to lead by example in promoting human rights, and I am pleased that the OCHR is actively striving to achieve this goal."
