Muscat: In order to raise the standard of living of a large segment of workers and to increase their contribution to the per capita income, which will enhance their purchasing power and improve the money flow in the local market, the Majlis A'Shura on Tuesday approved the requests to raise the wages of Omanis working in the private sector.

The Shura also approved the expressed requests to improve the efficiency of the tax system while collecting dues and also approved the requests to implement the production of medical water and submit it to the government to consider its medical aspects and their compatibility with the health standards required for such projects.

Earlier in the day, Dr. Tahira al Lawati, a member, said there is an urgent need to review the ceiling for obtaining housing assistance according to developments in line with the objectives of Vision 2040.

She added that the ceiling of RO300 for the salary was set more than ten years ago and 78 percent of Omanis depend on wages and salaries, according to the Family Income and Expenditure Survey.

She said that the value-added tax of 5 percent increased the burden on low-income families, in light of the low levels of salaries for workers in the private sector, which has a minimum wage of RO325, in addition to the continuous problems of layoffs.
