Telecommunications Regulatory Authority issued a new permit to provide Internet of Things (IoT) services to provide smart and innovative services to beneficiaries.

The Authority issued a decision granting a permit to provide Internet of Things services to the Future Cities Company (Tadoom), which specialises in providing smart city solutions using the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence technologies.

The Authority stated that the decision aims to enable the provision of smart and innovative services to beneficiaries to raise the efficiency of services and reduce operational costs. The decision also seeks to promote the digital economy and investment opportunities in smart city applications.

Through this permit, the company will be able to provide various IoT applications such as utility management, smart meters, irrigation and agricultural applications management, and vehicle parking management.

Internet of Things services enable a large number of devices to communicate and share data, as this type of communication has the ability to provide great benefits to the economy and society in general across various sectors.

The regulation of the IoT took place for the first time in May 2022, through the issuance of a regulation regulating the provision of ‘IoT’ services issued by Resolution No. (93/2022). The regulation included four chapters, which are definitions and general provisions, the licenses chapter, the obligations and rights of authorised persons, and the penalties chapter.

IoT services may not be provided unless after obtaining a licence from the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, and the service cannot be provided for commercial purposes unless after obtaining a licence for that, and it is prohibited to assign, sell, rent or enable others to use the permit.

The IoT value chain consists of multiple elements, including devices, connectivity, big data, data analytics, and other applications, which comprise the IoT ecosystem and include various stakeholders.

Through its strategic objectives, the Authority seeks to enable investment in innovative technologies and services by building a competitive, diversified and integrated economy based on future foresight, innovation and entrepreneurship.
