Oman’s fishery sector boosted by growth in qualitative landings

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources has unveiled new data pointing to significant shifts in the quantity and value of fish landings from January to May 2023. These figures, released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) in its latest report, shed light on the dynamic nature of Oman's fishery industry and highlights the evolving trends across various fish species.


Demersal Fish: With a total of 51,804 tonnes, the landing of demersal fish experienced a noticeable 14.1% decrease. The value of these landings amounted to RO 9.4 million Large Pelagic Fish: Landings of large pelagic fish witnessed an 8.5% decline, totaling 74,203 tonnes. The overall value of these sizable pelagic fish reached RO 16.2 million.


Small Pelagic Fish: In a contrasting surge, the landing of small pelagic fish climbed 16.4%, to 203,467 tonnes, with a total value of RO 31.3 million.


Sharks & Rays: Landings of these species increased 7.6% to reach 2,075 tonnes of a total value of RO 400K.


Crustaceans & Molluscs: Total landings rose 5.5% to reach 3,548 tonnes with a combined value of RO 300K.


Assorted Fish: There was a significant 30.9% decrease in the landing of unidentified fish, totaling 1,714 tonnes of a total value of RO 300K.


Significantly, during the period from January to May 2023, Oman's traditional fishery sector recorded an impressive total fish landing quantity of 336,810 tonnes (versus 334,004 tonnes for the corresponding period of 2022).


The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources has been closely monitoring and supporting the sustainable development of this vital sector, ensuring the preservation of Oman's abundant marine resources for future generations.
