Municipality warns against abandoning vehicles in public places

Muscat: Muscat Municipality has once warned against leaving vehicles unattended in residential neighborhoods and public places for a long time as they pose security and environmental concerns.


The Municipality inspection team during their field visits deals with abandoned vehicles by placing a warning sticker on cars, which are removed from the site after a specific period.


The Local Law stipulates the imposition of an administrative fine of RO200 after seizing the neglected vehicle when its owner returns to the municipality. Fines for buses carrying carry 15 passengers or less, bicycles are RO400, and RO1,000 for trucks, buses (more than 15 passengers), locomotives, trailers, tractors, and vehicles used for transporting hazardous materials.


A fine of RO 5 shall be imposed on the owner of the neglected vehicle for each day if he is late in receiving the neglected vehicle from the impoundment site.


Article (6) stipulates that the municipality shall coordinate with the Royal Oman Police to take measures to sell the abandoned vehicle through a public auction, in the event that the owner of the neglected vehicle does not return to the municipality within 90 days from the date of its seizure.


Article 79 of Local Resolution No. (1/2006) regarding the protection of public health stipulates that it is not permissible to leave the vehicle on the road to avoid accidents or obstruct traffic.


Article 131 of the same regulations states that It is permissible to seize a neglected vehicle if it is found neglected anywhere on the road.
