Oman U23 team getting set for West Asian challenge

After an absence of 45 days, Oman Olympic (under-23) team will complete their first gathering camp after the long break on Tuesday. The camp was a great opportunity for the players to return back to action and reporting to their training sessions. The domestic camp began on Wednesday and run for almost a week period in Muscat at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex under supervision of national coach Akram Habreesh.


The main objective of the preparatory camp was to raise the fitness level and enhance the physical condition of the players for the forthcoming events. Moreover, the local gathering was a chance for the squad which featured mixed members to increase the harmony among them. The coaching staff headed by Habreesh and assisted by coach Majeed al Nazwani implemented some technical and tactical sessions.


The closest participation for the Olympic team will be in West Asian Championship in Iraq which will be held during June 10 to 20. It will followed by Arab Cup for Olympic Teams which will be held in Algeria in July.

The main assignment for the national Olympic team will be taking part in the U23 Asian Cup qualifiers in September. The draw of the Asian qualifiers will be held on May 25 while the dates of the matches will be during September 4 to 12 for all the groups. Oman team did not qualify in the previous edition of U23 Asian Cup which was held in Uzbekistan in July and August 2022. The championship ended with crowning Saudi Arabia as champions while the hosts ended as runners-up. Japan finished in third place after beating Australia 3-0 in the third and fourth play-off.


Oman will be in third and last level of the draw in the upcoming U23 Asian Cup. The U23 Asian Cup finals, which will be held in Doha, will act as qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Another major event for the Oman Olympic team players will be attending the Asian Games in China from September 23 to October 8.


The final squad for West Asian Championship will be announced after one more gathering. The coaching staff will evaluate the readiness and fitness level of all the players and will select the most appropriate candidates for the championship.
