Ahead of the commencement of construction work on Oman’s biggest solar PV development at Manah in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) – the sole buyer of electricity and water output – has invited qualified consultancy firms to bid for its contract to supervise the delivery of this new renewable energy landmark.

Made up of two distinct but similar-sized PV schemes – each of 500 megawatt-peak (MWp) capacity – the Manah venture will make a significant contribution to Oman’s goal to secure at least 39 per cent of its electricity requirements from renewable sources by 2040. Total investments in the pair of side-by-side solar Independent Power Projects (IPPs) - dubbed Manah I Solar IPP and Manah II Solar IPP - is about $800 million.

Last month, a consortium led by EDF Renewables Middle East, the regional arm of leading international energy giant EDF Renewables, and Korea Western Power Co Ltd (KOWEPO), a key player in South Korea’s power sector, was named the winner of Manah I Solar IPP.

Just earlier, the partnership of Singapore energy firm Sembcorp Utilities and Chinese clean energy supplier Jinko Power Technology received an award from OPWP for the implementation of Manah II Solar IPP.

Under either award, the winning consortium obtained a mandate to build, own and operate their respective 500 MW IPPs to be operational by 2025 and backed by a 20-year power purchase agreement with OPWP.

To help oversee the implementation of the two projects, OPWP – member of Nama Group – plans to appoint a consultant to provide project management and supervisory services during the construction, commissioning and testing phases of Manah I and Manah II Solar IPPs. Interested consultants have until June 11, 2023 to submit their proposals in this regard.
