Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman will join the international community in marking World Intellectual Property Day tomorrow (Wednesday), which falls on April 26 every year.
The annual event is launched by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to raise public awareness about the importance of intellectual property rights and their areas of functioning, like trademarks, patents and designs, as well as industrial copyright and geographical indications.
Oman marks this event, which lends support to innovative minds and encourages research in the field of intellectual property to create a network of national scholarly competencies in the field of intellectual property. The event is also an opportunity to exchange experiences and knowledge on intellectual property issues in various fields.
Dr Saleh Said Masn, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion for Commerce and Industry, told Oman News Agency (ONA) that this year's celebration is held under the theme of “Women and Intellectual Property: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity”. It underscores women’s great role in building society through all sectors of innovation, notably within the concept of sustainable development.
Omani women have received due care, attention and opportunities to actively participate in various activities across different sectors and specializations, he added.
The Undersecretary said that Omani women proved their mettle at local and international forums. They played a major role in advancing discoveries and establishing commercial establishments. Their accomplishments and roles earned them many awards and enabled them to become an effective partner in elevating Oman to the ranks of developed countries.
It is worth noting that Oman has joined many international agreements related to intellectual property.
