Muscat: A rockslide in Muscat Governorate, due to rains on Sunday damaged some vehicles and hampered traffic on the Al Amerat-Qurayat road.

In a statement, the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority (CDAA) said no injuries were recorded. 'Oman has been hampered by heavy rainfall in many parts following an air depression,' it stated.

On Sunday evening, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) issued a heavy rain alert advising the public to be cautious during rainfall and thunder showers and warning against crossing running wadis. 'The public are advised to avoid low-lying areas and venturing into the sea due to heavy rains expected from morning to evening on Tuesday over Hajar Mountains and the surrounding areas,' CAA statement said.

Rainfall ranging from 10 mm to 40 is expected in the governorates of South Al Sharqiyah, Muscat, Al Wusta and Dhofar, it added.

The impact of upper air trough is set to continue on Monday with an expected rainfall ranging between 10 mm to 45 mm.

The weather forecast for Monday stated that partly cloudy skies will prevail over most of the governorates with chance of isolated rain occasionally thundershower over Al Hajar Mountains and its adjoining area and parts of Dhofar, Al Wusta and South Al Sharqiyah governorates. There are chances of low level clouds or fog patches at late night or early morning over parts of South Al Sharqiyah, Al Wusta and Dhofar governorates and parts of Oman Sea coasts. There is also a chance for dust rising over desert and open areas due to strong winds.

The weather on Sunday saw continued activity of cumulus clouds over parts of the governorates of North and South Al Batinah, Al Dakhiliyah, Muscat, South Al Sharqiyah and Al Wusta, with rain of varying intensity, sometimes thundery, accompanied by active downward winds and hail. This led the Civil Aviation Authority to issue a weather alert from 11 am till 11 pm on Sunday. Cloud activity and rainfall of varying intensity resulting from upper air trough had been reported in parts of South Al Sharqiyah, North Al Batinah and Al Dakhiliyah governorates. There was also flow of clouds over the central desert.

Heavy thunder showers were reported over the governorates of Al Wusta, Dhofar, South Al Sharqiyah and Al Hajar Mountains. The rainfall ranged between 10 mm and 30 mm.

The civil aviation authority has also cautioned the public not to cross Wadis due to flash floods and to avoid low lying areas during the alert period.

Horizontal visibility could be less than 1,000 metres.

The influence of upper air trough is expected until Tuesday.
