MoAFWR constructs seven new flood protection dams

Muscat: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources(MoAFWR), has constructed seven more flood protection dams in different governorates at a cost of RO 227 million with the aim of enhancing the protection dam system to reduce the risk of flooding.


Three flood protection dams were built in the governorates of Muscat and Dhofar at a cost of RO 127 million. Four more dams are under construction two of them are in Muscat Governorate and the other two are in Dhofar Governorate at a total cost exceeding RO 100 million.

The construction of Al Jufainah flood protection dam will be complete by the end of the year. It will be the second of its kind in the Wilayat of Al Amerat. The dam is aimed at reducing the risk of flooding and protecting residential buildings in Al Amerat and commercial stores in Al Qurum, one of the worst-hit by Cyclone Gonu in 2007.


The dam is 2.66 km long, its reservoir is 73 sq km and has a capacity to store 15.7 million cubic metres of water. The project involves 6 dams built of compacted dirt and gravel. The dam is 800 metres long, 30 metres high with a bottom drainage hole for discharging the dam lake. It also has a channel for passing flood waters underneath the dam as well as a side dam with a length of 1,180 metres and a height of 24 metres.
